How to write a script?

Writing a script is the backbone of any great video—whether it’s an interview, a short devotional, or a storytelling piece. A solid script keeps your message clear, your audience engaged, and your purpose front and center. Here are practical tips to craft a script that works, no matter your experience level.

1. Define Your Purpose First

Before you write a word, know why you’re making this. Are you inspiring faith? Sharing a testimony? Teaching a skill? Nail down your goal—like “show how God’s peace changes lives”—and let it guide every line. A script without purpose is just noise.

  • Tip: Write your goal in one sentence at the top of your page. Glance at it as you go to stay on track.

2. Know Your Audience

Who’s watching? Teens needing hope? Adults seeking answers? Picture them—age, struggles, interests—and write like you’re talking straight to them. If it’s a faith video, maybe they’re wrestling with doubt or craving encouragement. Speak their language.

  • Tip: Jot down three things your audience cares about (e.g., real stories, quick takeaways, relatable vibes) and weave those in.

3. Start with a Hook

You’ve got seconds to grab attention—don’t waste ‘em. Open with a question, a bold statement, or a quick story. “Ever feel like life’s too heavy to carry?” or “My mom always said, ‘Don’t make up a bike’—and it stuck with me.” Make ‘em lean in.

  • Tip: Test your hook out loud. If it doesn’t hit you in the gut, rewrite it.

4. Outline Before You Write

Don’t just wing it—sketch the flow first. Break it into chunks:

  • Intro: Hook ‘em and preview what’s coming.
  • Middle: Deliver the meat—your story, point, or lesson.
  • End: Wrap it with a takeaway or call to action (e.g., “Trust Him today”).

An outline keeps you from rambling and losing the thread.

  • Tip: Use bullet points for each section. Keep it simple—one idea per chunk.

5. Write Like You Talk

Scripts aren’t essays—keep it conversational. Say it out loud as you write. “Jesus said, ‘My yoke’s easy,’ and that’s been my lifeline” beats “The biblical text indicates a lighter burden.” Natural flow trumps stiff words every time.

  • Tip: Read it to a friend. If it sounds robotic, tweak it ‘til it feels real.
